Limits for selection
Animal production is a hot topic in many discussions, not only because of the environmental impact, but also from an animal welfare point of view. These seminars will focus on some of the main discussions on the field of future animal production: what is the scientific background of this problem and how can research contribute solutions?

7 September 2010 (13.30h): 'Limits for selection: Belgian blue cattle', introduction by prof. M. Georges (ULg) and disputandus dr. I. Kolkman (UGent)

The Belgian blue cattle is well-known for his strong muscular development and production of lean beef meat. Due to the high musculature, caesarian section is common practice, although ethical questions can be formulated. Within the breed, other (genetic) problems exist. What are the possibilities for future selection within the Belgian blue breed, using genetic research and selection?
